the Swedish Mens Chorus ‘Orphei Drängar’ in Concert as part of their 2017 USA tour

The world-class, 80-member Swedish men’s chorus, Orphei Drängar, returns to the USA this March at the invitation of the American Choral Directors Association to perform at the ACDA National Conference in Minneapolis.  In addition, they’ll perform public concerts in the San Francisco area March 5 and 6, and in St. Paul, MN on March 10.

Since 2008, the Chorus has been led by Cecilia Rydinger Alin, who is winning top musical recognition and awards in Sweden.  Robert Sund, Orphei Drängar’s former director, will return to the States to conduct the 2017 USA concerts.  Their performance includes choral gems and features Swedish mezzo-soprano Katija Dragojevics.

Founded in 1853, the choir has expanded the scope of its activities, its repertoire, its concert forms, and its venues. Tours of Sweden are complemented by far-flung journeys to Asia, the US, Canada, and Europe. Concerts at Royal Albert Hall in London, Lincoln Center in New York, and Symphony Hall in Osaka, alternate with performances in stone quarries and paper mills. Leading artists in Sweden jostle with internationally acclaimed stars like Malena Ernman, Peter Mattei, and Anne Sofie von Otter.

Folksongs and romanticism contrast with jazz, newly commissioned atonal music, lyricism, and Riverdance. But whatever OD sings, the sound is the same: OD’s unique blend of light young voices and older, more mature ones is the result of many years of work to refine the special instrument that is the male-voice choir. Rich tradition is the point of departure. From there, anything goes.

“I have had much pleasure in working with Orphei Drängar during my time as chief conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and I consider OD to be one of the most brilliant men´s choirs in the world. The singers are highly professional and their repertoire is of a very wide range, but then they have been trained for years by Eric Ericson, the world´s leading choir conductor. I also admire the strength and the beauty of their voices. OD is an extraordinary powerful choir!”. NEEME JÄRVI

“OD possesses a combination of power, energy, and culture, and the joy of discovery combined with professional technical and musical prowess.”  ESA-PEKKA SALONEN
